The new initiative comes as demand for delivery services is on the rise due to the COVID-19 outbreak with citizens urged to avoid unnecessary movements and encouraged to embrace online shopping.

Under Yego Delivery, Kigalians will be able to make orders of meals, groceries and medicines among others and receive them in a short period of time.

"We have been testing our service for over a month and have seen that most orders are delivered within 35 minutes. Moreover, since our drivers deliver only one order at a time, this means your food order arrives warm and fresh," the company's statement.

Yego Innovisions so far has over 50 motor bikes to deliver orders, and it aims to increase the fleet to a thousand in the near future, as it also looks for ways to penetrate other markets outside Kigali

The drivers were trained on ways to maintain COVID-19 preventive measures while delivering.

The focus of the training was on teaching them how to stay safe, maintain a safe distance while delivering, and how to practice proper hygiene at all times.

Drivers will also wear masks and use sanitizers before handing over goods.

The new delivery service will be accessed by anyone who has a mobile phone, with no need to connect to the internet.

A client will simply call a merchant, place his or her order and pay for it, and ask the merchant to deliver the order via YEGO.

The merchant will thereafter provide YEGO with the client's phone number. An agent of Yego will then call the client to confirm the delivery location, and deliver the order in 60 minutes or less.

The delivery charges will be calculated automatically based on the distance from the merchant to the customer, as all motor bikes doing the delivery are equipped with ICFMs (Intelligent Connected Fare Meters).

All payments for the service will be cashless, via Airtel Money, MTN Mobile Money, MTN Tap & Pay, or Yegomoto Ride-Tap-Pay NFC tags.

Yego Innovations Ltd is already partnering with over 60 merchants including restaurants, groceries, supermarkets and pharmacies.
